Scholarly Framework

Our Methodology

How Usul Learning approaches the presentation of Islamic learning materials: with clarity, structure, and careful references.

Foundation

Three Pillars of Our Approach

The Qur'an

The Qur'an is the primary source. All teachings begin with and are grounded in the Book of Allah, the ultimate criterion and guide for all Muslims.

Hadith Literature

The Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ is the second source. Hadith references are selected from recognised collections and graded reports, with care taken to avoid weak or unsupported evidence.

Shafi'i Madhab

Legal rulings follow the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence — one of the four established madhabs of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah.

Our Four Guiding Principles

1

Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah

Usul Learning is an independent educational project working within the mainstream Sunni Shafi'i tradition, Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah, which represents the vast majority of Muslims throughout history.

2

The Shafi'i Juristic School

Where legal rulings are concerned, this project follows the Shafi'i madhab, the school of jurisprudence founded by Imam Muḥammad ibn Idrīs al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him). This madhab is particularly strong in Southeast Asia, South Asia, and East Africa, and has produced an immense body of carefully reasoned legal scholarship over more than a millennium.

3

Established References

A core principle of this project is to present established teachings from recognised references in the Shafi'i tradition and hadith literature. The author does not seek to derive new rulings or introduce novel positions.

4

Structure for the Learner

Islamic knowledge has always been transmitted through structured learning, from teacher to student, following a progression from foundational to advanced topics. Usul Learning applies this principle to written educational material: each volume builds on the last, guiding the reader through a logical, step-by-step journey into Islamic worship and practice.

"The material aims to present referenced Islamic learning material in a clear and structured format for learners."
